In 1994 at the 5th Annual AHF Academy Awards benefit, Hollywood stars came to support AHF. With actor Harvey Fierstein hosting, awards, and silent auctions, this event brought attention to the AIDS crisis and helped to raise funds for AHF’s hospices and clinics. Stars like Whoopi Goldberg, Joan Van Ark, Sally Kirkland, and Carole Cook showed their support, as well as Dr. Michael Gottleib, who identified AIDS as a new disease in 1981 and continued to work with HIV/AIDS research and activism. At the official Oscars, Tom Hanks won Best Actor for his role as a man living with AIDS in the movie Philadelphia, making the evening that much more poignant.

Did you know that AHF created a holiday? In 2009, AHF instated International Condom Day, an international holiday that occurs every February 13th. From 2009 on, AHF has celebrated International Condom Day in all of its bureaus across the world with testing events, concerts, and condom distribution. AHF even created its own condom brands in 2009, ‘LOVE Condoms’ and later ‘ICON Condoms’. To commemorate the first International Condom Day, AHF even created a condom commercial starring @TheSherylLeeRalph. However, FOX refused to air the 30-second commercial during an episode of Family Guy, so AHF projected the commercial on the Sunset Strip “Jumbotron” while passing out 20,000 LOVE condoms.
